Dan Karlok
This five minute amateur short / Romero spoof shot on 16mm by college students (the director was attending University of Bridgeport at the time) did well working the college circuit (see article below from UB's student paper The Scribe) and played on community access TV but it was also purchased by the USA Network back when they were still cool and aired on their cable TV series Night Flight and used as a late night bumper. Remember the "day after" scenes in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD where a posse of none-too-bright locals hunt down and shoot zombies... or basically anything they see moving off in the distance (just ask Ben)? How about that scene in DAWN OF THE DEAD where our heroes fly their helicopter over a rural area and see a bunch of happy-go-lucky rednecks making sport of blasting the living dead? Well that's what we essentially get here with a group of flannel-clad hunters (led by a burly bearded guy) and a group of zombies (led by a peppy, grinning Boy Scout) clashing in the woods, only this is one big musical number. The chorus of the song has the hunters alternating chants of "beat 'em or burn 'em" with zombies chanting the film's title.
Some of the lyrics are pretty amusing and there's a bit of amateur gore (head explosion, gunshots, arm ripped off) as well as slapstick gags (zombie dominoes, bloated zombies drinking Alka Seltzer), dancing, a band playing and a zombie being set on fire. My favorite bit was hunters posing for photos with a dead zombie over the hood of their truck.
Karlok went on to become a cinematographer, electrician, gaffer and documentary filmmaker whose longest stint was working on the Law & Order television series. Al Magliochetti, who went on to do visual effects for big budget Hollywood movies, is thanked in the closing credits. I'm not sure if he did the make-up or what exactly.
