The 2015 Orloks - 1989 Results

Started many moons ago by Prof-Hieronymos-Grost, the Orloks were a yearly poll on the IMDb horror boards where users submitted Top 5 lists of their favorite horror movies for each year. All of the results were then tabulated to come up with a definitive list of the year's most-liked genre offerings. Alas, when the good Professor decided to depart the boards years ago, the awards went with him... that is until now. IMDb-er seth_yeah - taking on responsibilities as both host and calculator - has decided to bring back this long-standing tradition in 2015, and now the awards will have a permanent place right here on this blog. Scoring is rather simple and done on a weighted system where first choice receives 5 points, second choice 4 points, etc., with a +1 bonus then awarded to the #1 selection on each list. IMDb release years are being used, but it is left up to voters to determine what they may or may not consider horror (which may be in conflict with IMDb's genre labeling system). If you'd like to participate, head on over to the IMDb HORROR BOARDS to vote! So without any further ado, the results...

DR. CALIGARI
SLEEPAWAY CAMP 3: TEENAGE WASTELAND
VAMPIRE VS. VAMPIRE
DANCE OF THE DAMNED
THE FORGOTTEN ONE
I, MADMAN
OUT OF THE DARK
TRAPPED
WICKED STEPMOTHER
TOXIC AVENGER PART II

UNMASKED, PART 25 shouldn't have diverted as much from the "romance"; i'd have put that on here, about mid-point. also, i keep remembering GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE as better than it is. need to see SOCIETY again. need to see SANTA SANGRE for the first time -- i fell asleep during PROM NIGHT II, once, and it was playing when i woke up... felt very disoriented and confused for several minutes!

otherwise-wise:

BLACK RAIN (imamura)
CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS
STREET OF NO RETURN
DR. CALIGARI
PEDICAB DRIVER
DO THE RIGHT THING
STEVEN BANKS: HOME ENTERTAINMENT CENTER
SIDEWALK STORIES
KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE
CHAMELEON STREET

Damn good Top 10 for the year though I haven't seen Dr. Caligari or Wicked Stepmother yet. I think the horrible reviews the latter got put me off of it. Not sure why I have yet to see Dr. Caligari as I love Nightdreams and Cafe Flesh. Black Rain is another I've been meaning to check out. I saw the remake (starring Michael Douglas I think) when I was a kid and didn't like it at all.

at least you know what you're getting in to with DR. CALIGARI. many bewildered, unenthusiastic reviews out there. they were expecting something like FORBIDDEN ZONE, maybe?

WICKED STEPMOTHER can wait. if you don't worship larry cohen it's a complete disaster. fantastic cast, either way.

need to re-rate SLEEPAWAY CAMP III; looks silly at #2 for the year. but i like how i remember it...

Haven't seen Forbidden Zone either. I think I have an aversion to intentional, aggressive cult / camp movies. lol

I do happen to like Larry Cohen a lot so I will definitely check that out eventually.

SC3 is enjoyable. Don't see why not! I have Hard to Die in my Top 10 for 1990.
