G Titles

Films are listed by their original English-language release title when available. If the film has not been officially released in the U.S. then I'll use the informal release title. If that's not an option, then I'll go with the original foreign release title. I am trying to database every horror title made between 1950 - 1990 right here and will constantly be adding more in the future so make sure to check back! A * next to a title means I have it rated and have uploaded a photo but haven't done the review yet. If you see anything missing, shoot me a message and it will be added.

Hey, what about "The Godsend"? Slow and silly, but I was rather fond of it when it came out.

Not sure how this one got left off but I'll add it. Thank you!

GUESTS IN THE HOUSE (1988); directed by jaime luk, who did DR. VAMPIRE a couple of years later. set-up sorta reminded me of BEETLEJUICE, with domestic ghosts disturbed by new tenants. it's mostly light comedy/drama, but the ghosts get nasty in the last 10 minutes.

Looking at my index, I really need to watch more films starting with "ghost." There are lots of huge gaps here. Thanks a lot, Asia!

Gift of Terror (1973) TV movie. Despite it being tagged "comedy" on imdb, it is definitely not. The parent ABC series is labeled "comedy" and it carries over. imdb has stupid rules when it comes to what they consider episodes of a TV series (even if it's a series comprised of films) and editing is a lot more limited on those. That's why I've never sorted out their 'Wide World of Mystery' mess. The pages I created for the films that weren't on the site would change from film format to TV episode format.

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

IMDb has gotten worse way over time, especially since they got rid of their message boards. I stopped trying to deal with admins a long time ago and the site has been flooded with tons of false info (probably given to them from the same people who used to troll the message boards).

This one sounds interesting. I wonder if it, and a lot of other made-for-TV films that were shown as part of a series, even still exists?

Hopefully. Though ABC wiped their tapes of many inn 1978 it seems that they weren't the masters in most cases and just the past couple weeks we've turned up a handful of them in archives, and with Disney, Fremantle, Dick Clark Prod., etc. "Gift" is unfortunately still MIA though.

I had switched over to tmdb when imdb got rid of their board but I switched back as tmdb never added their promised trivia section, you can't see alternate titles unless you go into edit mode (wtf?) and their admins turned out to be just as pig-headed and stubborn. After a few arguments with them I realized decisions are final no matter how stupid and inconsistent they turn out to be. So "Terror on Tape" and "Filmgore" are now gone from letterbox'd because tmdb basically refuses to class them above fan films.

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

I've had similar bad experiences with TMDB. I was a very frequent contributor there and then out of the blue they banned me. I found out it was because I added the English title of Spiritism to the Mexican film Espiritismo and someone reported me. I did this round-and-round over email and had to explain multiple times that the movie WAS released under that title in the U.S. (by K. Gordon Murray) and they finally un-banned me.

So I started contributing again, then suddenly they banned me again because I didn't always click the "video" button on my submissions. You probably know this already but if you mark something "video," it suddenly isn't considered a "real" movie and is taken off Letterboxd. It's absolutely stupid because every single direct-to-video film would be removed from LB if you used it like you're supposed to. And the mods couldn't provide any explanation to me as to why the "video" flag could only be used on *certain" DTV movies but not others. Then they went through and deleted hundreds of posters I had submitted to them over the years, so that was the final straw.

Makes me wish I knew more about web design so I could make a decent horror film database myself.

> banned me again because I didn't always click the "video" button

well, then there's a ban in my future... a good chunk of the stuff i log wouldn't even be there if that was rigidly followed or enforced. "the video flag is for movies not reviewed by critics." i mean, you can dig up contemporary print reviews for just about anything...

TV-wise, i put serious time into new entries for the DETECTIVE EXTRALARGE movies, because the existing pages 404 at TMDB. all i wanted to do was create a uniform, tidy look and add the missing credits. mine got deleted, a mod explained, because it was originally submitted as a show, and they'd rather keep the initial classification.

[recently, though, i added the last six episodes of jimmy stewart's HAWKINS series, since the first two were already on LB. broadcast in a rotating slot with the SHAFT TVMs -- which used to be listed -- alongside other one-shots, issued as THE COMPLETE TV-MOVIE COLLECTION by warner archive... but i totally get it if these disappear.]

> "Terror on Tape" and "Filmgore" are now gone from letterbox'd

MAD RON'S PREVUES FROM HELL isn't there anymore, either.

i keep track of everything through offline lists and databases, but i like LB for quick, visual filtering, yet it's not as useful to me as it could be due to hundreds of omitted titles.

"well, then there's a ban in my future... "

Maybe! I somehow managed to piss them off simply by contributing a lot of correct info that was missing. I'm kind of done with most of the databases to be honest. I'll go occasionally to get a bit of info but (IMDb especially) has gotten so bad / inaccurate in recent years I always have to triple check anything I get from there. Nowadays I just keep detailed notes of my own taken from the film credits.

TMDB had a lot of potential to be great but the mods (at least SOME of them; I did deal with a few nice ones to be fair), illogical rules and kind of snobbish "This isn't a REAL film" shtick is a major turn off. I forgot to mention that I also got in trouble for using the "Translated Title (English)" option to (gasp!) translate titles into English. And the mods explanation to me about that didn't make a lick of sense either. Why is that even an option to begin with?

As far as LB is concerned, I don't get their stance on adult films at all. I can totally understand not wanting sexually-explicit DVD cases and such on there, but banning most adult films yet allowing stuff like In the Realm of the Senses, Stranger by the Lake and Shortbus, and sexually explicit films by Lars von Trier, Gaspar Noe, Abel Ferrara and other "esteemed" directors, on there just doesn't sit right. It's like they're being judge and jury about what should and should not be taken seriously. IMDb only allows posters for explicit films from *certain* directors and will even accept posters with nudity from *certain* directors but won't allow you to submit a poster with no nudity for an adult film. It makes no sense aside from being general snobbery.

I've not seen Filmgore, but Terror on Tape and Mad Ron's Prevues both have original content that would merit a place on there and both have been reviewed quite a bit! Looks like they also removed Zombiethon yet are OK with all those recent Charles Band rip-off releases with ZERO original content where he simply shortens previous features to create a new "anthology." Ugh.

GODZILLA VS. WOLFMAN (1983) Toho filmmakers rented equipment and made their own Big G film. It's in limbo of course as Toho didn't commission this. But I heard a few copies snuck out recently.

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

I found an article about this Godzilla movie that said they were putting the finishing touches on this. Unfortunately, the article was written almost 10 years ago. Insane! Wonder what the hold-up is, especially since Godzilla is as popular as ever?

THE GHOSTING (1991/'92); church-set regional horror, shot in 1987.

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

Another I've never heard of before! Has this by chance leaked online anywhere?

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

IMDb says the budget of The Ghosting was 750,000 dollars. Wha?

spookyx3 said...

even if they're factoring in buying the church, that budget seems unlikely. [got my copy from a youtube channel that disappeared pretty quick back in mid-2018. there _are_ preview sheets floating around. i'll look for it.]

The maker owned Starlite Drive-in, sold it for a million bucks and put most of it into the movie. I've yet to see it online. It played a couple theaters in Nov. '91. Actually it played the theaters he sold his drive-in to...

That's actually quite a budget for a regional horror film from the 80s! But it's also possible they lied about how much it cost to make. I've read that was a common practice back then so they could sell it for more $$$ to distributors.

Good thing is that these things have a tendency to pop back up again on YT or somewhere else. I just found a copy of Southern Shockers on YT, which I've been looking for for awhile. It's dubbed into Spanish (I think this was the only VHS release) but has subtitles.

zmbdog said...

Supposedly he bought the church that's in the film and that's where most of the money went. Apparently it's also where most of the unsold VHS tapes now reside.

I think I just sent this via email. ugh

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

That's a rather brilliant idea. Buy a house, property or land; include that in the budget of your film. You could build a real estate empire working that way. 🤣

spookyx3 said...

> As far as LB is concerned, I don't get their stance on adult films at all.

they've reversed it. adult films are now showing up there. check your settings.

spookyx3 said...

> Southern Shockers on YT ... has subtitles.

nice. wasn't much fun straining to hear the original audio.

probably confusing this with MOVING TARGET (1988) which had dueling soundtracks, seen around the same time. getting old sucks!

About time! That was such a stupid rule to begin with. Now I need to go mark some of those off. Hope they also change the dumb "video" rule now. I spent a chunk of time putting the Electric Blue series on there then they just took them off like a week later.

Also, I need to remember to download Southern Shockers before it's too late. I bookmarked a bunch of old movies from Singapore to watch later and was looking for them last weekend and they disappeared.

spookyx3 said...

i grabbed it again. this time with the subs!

> Now I need to go mark some of those off.

they don't show up in searches, only 1500 titles have migrated over, and you can't import manually. rather than let everything through they're calling this a "curated selection" (uh-oh) with more to follow. we'll see...

> I spent a chunk of time putting the Electric Blue series on there

if they _do_ start adding video-porn en-masse then there's no argument against DTV releases anymore. hopefully the EBs will be back.

GUYVER: OUT OF CONTROL (1986), has some horror imagery -- gushing blood, monsters sliced in half etc. new line's live-action adaption (shot in 1990) is more like the then current TMNT movies and doesn't really qualify, but might be of interest: produced by brian yuzna, directed by screaming mad george; stars david gale, michael berryman, peter spellos, jeffrey combs (spoofing RE-ANIMATOR) & LQ in a cameo. fairly nasty transformation scene towards the end, considering the goofy tone and PG-13 rating.

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

I believe I read somewhere that the 1990 Guyver is going to be released in a gorier, R-rated version here sometime. I've never seen it but it looks very interesting and the cast is hard to beat.

spookyx3 said...

supposedly the 1994 sequel, DARK HERO, is closer to the source material. there's _another_ adaption -- a 12-part OVA from 1989-1992. essentially formulaic "monster of the week" slugfests. not really my thing but i watched it all anyway, ha.

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

Well hey, I can add the entries made in 1989 - 1990 on here.

spookyx3 said...

that's the first six parts. around 25 minutes each, directed by koichi ishiguro. the rest is all 1992.

TMDB update: support sent a note about deleting THRILLER's MURDER IN MIND (1973) for being a TV show. not sure if that means the other eps will soon vanish from LB or i'm just unlucky.

The Bloody Pit of Horror said...

Senseless, as per usual. An exception should obviously be made for these since they are standalone stories at feature length and most have been released as features on home video. Not at all different than a made-for-TV movie. They may as well remove every American TV film that debuted under the "Movie of the Week" banner as the "Thriller" banner operated essentially the same way.

spookyx3 said...

same thing happened to the episode DOUBLE KILL. looks like they're staying up even with the TMDB pages gone. similar to the way LB retains deleted poster art.
