Psycho Cop (1988)

Directed by:
Wallace Potts

Many horror fans out there have probably seen the late-night cable staple PSYCHO COP 2 (1992; aka PSYCHO COP RETURNS) and probably wondered about the existence of the relatively obscure original. Well I found it. It sucks! Three unbearable yuppie college couples travel to a big, secluded vacation house despite the usual tell tale signs that they should go home. A psychotic, Satan-worshipping policeman (Bobby Ray Shafer), who walks like a robot (and gives a performance to match) does most of them in. The annoying characters constantly talk to themselves, are always losing things, wander off into the woods alone, guzzle buckets full of beer and whine about the feeling of being watched ("It's probably just a deer!"). People are killed with a knife down the throat, hatchet and crucifixion. This is one instance where you may have a hard time telling if it's intentionally this bad or it was all accidental. I am leaning toward the latter, but just remember the common theme is awful. Awful acting, awful writing, awful filmmaking, awful movie. "It can't be!" screams the pot smoking caretaker before taking an axe to the head.

Score: 1 out of 10

up front: i pretty much abhor slasher movies. what i appreciated here was two characters that weren't as stupid as the others, who actually pieced together what was happening and got proactive about saving their own skins -- very rare in this subgenre. also, having the antagonist be an officer of the law allowed for the "we're saved! waitaminute!" scenario to play out a few times. mr. psycho cop himself is completely bonkers, with wild bulging eyes and the collection of justice based one-liners you expect; felt like he was doing parody and everyone else was playing it straight. didn't quite buy -- if i have it right -- that the cop was a satan-worshipping murderer who escaped from prison and during the manhunt joined the police force under a different name . . .

no. not a good movie.

To be honest I don't remember enough about this one to really comment too much about it. I just remember how horrible the acting was and how cheesy the one-liners were. I'm gonna re-watch a lot of these film so I can reevaluate them / do longer reviews / put up screen caps for them, so this one's on my list.

i was reaching to say anything good about the movie. never underestimate the seductive appeal of mid-late '80s Bs. started out this year simply plugging gaps and pretty soon a whole lot of stuff like PSYCHO COP got into the 'to-watch' pile. i cannot pass up titles like that from this era.

I have a hard time passing up anything from the 80s period, even when I know better. lol. I did watch Psycho Cop 2 not too long ago and it was slightly better than the first based on what I remember of it.
