Started many moons ago by Prof-Hieronymos-Grost, the Orloks were a yearly poll on the IMDb horror boards where users submitted Top 5 lists of their favorite horror movies for each year. All of the results were then tabulated to come up with a definitive list of the year's most-liked genre offerings. Alas, when the good Professor decided to depart the boards years ago, the awards went with him... that is until now. IMDb-er seth_yeah - taking on responsibilities as both host and calculator - has decided to bring back this long-standing tradition in 2015, and now the awards will have a permanent place right here on this blog. Scoring is rather simple and done on a weighted system where first choice receives 5 points, second choice 4 points, etc., with a +1 bonus then awarded to the #1 selection on each list. IMDb release years are being used, but it is left up to voters to determine what they may or may not consider horror (which may be in conflict with IMDb's genre labeling system). Liked this one quite a bit. It gets quite a lot of "boring" comments but I didn't find it boring at all.

Definitely my #1 pick for this year, but I can understand why The Fly won the poll as Henry isn't really the type of movie you can watch anytime. There are a lot of good films to choose from this year.

ReplyDeletereal quick: i can understand why it's disliked the way it is -- the vampires are a family unit, yuen biao is wasted (all low level stunt work -- he's mostly just thrown into glass cabinets, wooden doors, walls), it updates to present day, the kid's stuff. thing is, it has the exact kind of cinematography, production design & overall feel that i keep chasing and looking for in other films of the period. i absolutely love the doctor's workshop and the wonderful extended silent-comedy style centrepiece that makes use of it. at this point, MV II is so much more to me than what's probably there, if that makes _any_ sense. given the majority opinion, i keep wondering when the magic will wear off but it never has.

possibly another where unless you've had a long history with it (or aren't a die-hard fredhead) it won't work for you. just so you know, i think i'm rating it completely on the sense of style than the actual content of the movie.

great movie. i've only seen it twice, second time to show to someone maybe about six years after it came out on tape. it's not something i ever think about needing to look at again. sticks with you.
