The 2015 Orloks - 1988 Results

Started many moons ago by Prof-Hieronymos-Grost, the Orloks were a yearly poll on the IMDb horror boards where users submitted Top 5 lists of their favorite horror movies for each year. All of the results were then tabulated to come up with a definitive list of the year's most-liked genre offerings. Alas, when the good Professor decided to depart the boards years ago, the awards went with him... that is until now. IMDb-er seth_yeah - taking on responsibilities as both host and calculator - has decided to bring back this long-standing tradition in 2015, and now the awards will have a permanent place right here on this blog. Scoring is rather simple and done on a weighted system where first choice receives 5 points, second choice 4 points, etc., with a +1 bonus then awarded to the #1 selection on each list. IMDb release years are being used, but it is left up to voters to determine what they may or may not consider horror (which may be in conflict with IMDb's genre labeling system). If you'd like to participate, head on over to the IMDb HORROR BOARDS to vote! So without any further ado, the results...

  2. Haven't even heard of half of the movies on your second list. Will have to check some of those out! This was a pretty strong horror year. I'm personally not a fan of Hellbound but the rest of the Top 5 and most of the Top 10 is pretty strong I think.

  3. i'll spotlight NSN, because it's the only porn movie (except maybe something or other directed by eric edwards) that i'd put on a legit 10-best list. you can keep your BARBARA BROADCASTs, AMANDA BY NIGHTs, and CAFE FLESHs, NSN is _it_, and being made outside of the accepted golden-age, well into the video-era, when budgets, inspiration, and enthusiasm were at an all-time low, just makes it all the more laudable and... yeah, fascinating. this is a "_real_ comedy", not just a couple of amusing lines as part of a frame to initiate a string of utilitarian sex scenes. whereas most of the people in porn adopted pseudonyms, not because they were ashamed of what they were doing, but because it allowed them to avoid taking direct responsibility for the more often than not lousy work they turned in, leslie, at least to begin with, truly cared about his films, and it shows. yeah, it's all subjective, i know. most folks would look at NURSES, see it as indistinguishable from most other lousy video-porn and that'd be that, but it's 100% on my wavelength.

as for the horror, i need to see the foreign language stuff that's listed. don't know VAMPIRE'S KISS. thought about listing THE BLOB remake, just not sure how i'd feel about it now. it was a good year.

  4. Sounds like something I'd enjoy! Those 80s videos may be cheap but they had a more upbeat spirit to them than what they make now. Cafe Flesh kind of fails as a porno but I like it as a movie movie that just happens to have hardcore. The same team's Nightdreams is a better porno porno. I wouldn't mind seeing Amanda by Night because of Veronica Hart.

Vampire's Kiss I have not seen yet. I think Nick Cage being in it has kept me away. lol. I like The Blob remake quite a bit. In fact it's one of the ONLY remakes I think is actually good.

while leslie's first few subsequent efforts -- especially CHAMELEON & GOIN' DOWN SLOW -- are better films, there's something about NSN, even with it's rough edges (& hasty makeover of the sets used in MOTEL SWEETS the previous year) that really gets me. in 1994, after 25 or so films, he left VCA to start making 'gonzo'. lots of no-plot videos that share simple direct titles with only a issue number to differentiate them. these i have no interest in.

    > Cafe Flesh ... Nightdreams

they're good, but i'll take sayadian's DR. CALIGARI over them.

    > I wouldn't mind seeing Amanda by Night because of Veronica Hart.

she's a fine actress. can't remember which films made me a fan or that showcase her best anymore. gary graver was fairly consistent until he began shooting on videotape; think 10 1/2 WEEKS (1986) may have been his first.

    > Vampire's Kiss I have not seen yet. I think Nick Cage being in it has kept me away.

    that'll do it!

    > The Blob ... one of the ONLY remakes I think is actually good.

my aversion is only limited to this current (unending) wave. i've happily avoided all of the remakes released since the 1995 VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (can you blame me?). life's short enough. BLOB '88 is on the re-see list.

  6. Definitely don't blame you at all for avoiding remakes. Most of them are terrible. A few I do enjoy are Body Snatchers 78, The Blob, The Fly, The Ring and Let Me In.
