Was just looking at my LB profile, where I mostly just rate horror or related stuff (even vaguely related) and most of my 90s favorites are sci-fi (Dark City), dark dramas (Clean Shaven), true crime (Heavenly Creatures; Deep Crimson), black comedy (Serial Mom; Delicatessen) and what many would class as thrillers (Silence of the Lambs). I really only have a couple of indisputable horror films (Candyman, Blair Witch among them) rated as high. Hell, New Nightmare may even make my Top 20 horrors for the entire decade and, though I really like it, it wouldn't crack my Top 20 any other decade. I definitely need to re-watch In the Mouth of Madness sometime, though!

The more recent horror films I watch, the more I'm realizing that the 2010s have basically already kicked the ass of the 90s and 2000s as far as horror cinema is concerned. There have been a lot of really good genre films the past few years like Get Out, It Follows, Train to Busan, Raw, The Wailing, I Saw the Devil, Ex Machina, It Comes at Night, Housebound and others. Even a lot of the second tier stuff I've seen (Barracuda, Prevenge, Lovely Molly, Honeymoon, Hounds of Love and lots more) is pretty solid. The Bloody Pit of Horrorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04419921450872885649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5214930440884348127.post-70532766548554824112018-09-01T16:35:32.700-04:002018-09-01T16:35:32.700-04:00i can understand forming an attachment to any of t...i can understand forming an attachment to any of the main DREAM WARRIORS actors but i'm good with tuesday knight's take. because all we got to see is arquette's timid kristen -- and i have no imagination -- it's hard for me to see her fitting into #4.

yeah. craven wanted III to be the last one, so at the time a lot of those ideas were literally just an (uninspired) means to an end.

it took me a couple of years to get around to NEW NIGHTMARE. by '94 i'd already retreated away from new horror. saw it on video in probably '96 and liked it, but i'd dug my heels in and wasn't going to fully embrace anything made during those years (MOUTH OF MADNESS was the big exception).spookyx3https://www.blogger.com/profile/16031768705430185415noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5214930440884348127.post-91190735518135398902018-08-28T18:59:31.943-04:002018-08-28T18:59:31.943-04:00They definitely mucked up the plot too much here.....They definitely mucked up the plot too much here... yet this probably has the best nightmare visuals of the entire series, so that *does* help a lot. Langenkamp and Arquette were both awkward though I still liked having Langenkamp around and it's interesting to see Arquette early on in her career. I know there are a lot of Tuesday Knight haters but I didn't think she was any better or worse playing Kristen.

Even though I don't hold it against this film, I do think the mythology this sequel introduced spelled the beginning of the end for the series as a whole. New Nightmare offered something of a reprieve but (unfortunately) that movie was also rejected by a lot of fans. The Bloody Pit of Horrorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04419921450872885649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5214930440884348127.post-20005787015604160272018-08-22T16:58:31.589-04:002018-08-22T16:58:31.589-04:00i went into this one expecting nothing but good th...i went into this one expecting nothing but good things (uh-oh). it's obviously DREAM WARRIORS where langenkamp's performance is problematic. what worked for teen nancy, doesn't work here; i don't believe her in this more mature academic role. still, it's good to have her back. while patricia arquette is acting appropriately for a wired, despondent character, her delivery is _also_ substandard. my favorite sequence: that first hypnosis session (which successfully faked me out) with the newton's cradle balls, dream powers, and momentarily happy kids. like you, i didn't appreciate expanding freddy's history, bringing in the church... then this deus ex machina of burying remains, altogether a not insignificant portion of the movie. i still like #3's style, but the original _is_ the better film. 7/10. spookyx3https://www.blogger.com/profile/16031768705430185415noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5214930440884348127.post-12706709707678402202018-08-19T15:30:54.077-04:002018-08-19T15:30:54.077-04:00That probably explains why there are four scriptwr...That probably explains why there are four scriptwriters credited! The Bloody Pit of Horrorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04419921450872885649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5214930440884348127.post-37784694196157661902018-08-18T23:49:30.076-04:002018-08-18T23:49:30.076-04:00It's been years since I've looked into Cra...It's been years since I've looked into Craven's original solo script for this; I remember it being better in some ways, but worse in others (for an example, Freddy's dialogue sounded like it came directly from a Rob Zombie film--he at one point screams something to the effect of, "CUNT! I'LL TAKE A SHIT ON YOUR CORPSE!")Lord Crayakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00430081017588853531noreply@blogger.com
